A superb quality Victorian 3" lens brass stargazing and distance telescope with interchangeable lenses, sight and original tripod stand by Aubrey Franks of Manchester c.1890. Three inch lens to the... end of the polished brass barrel with sight set to the side, remotely adjustable telescopic lens with three separate interchangeable lenses for field or stargazing. Sat on the original revolving brass pillar with steady set to the side to allow the angle of the scope to be held. Mounted on the original adjustable mahogany tripod base with brass collars to the centres of each allowing it to be separated for transport; and a small cast iron table top stand for internal table top use. Bears the makers name A Franks, Manchester along with Bournemouth retailers name. Aubrey Franks followed his Father Joseph Franks into business and was situated in Deansgate, Manchester, trading from 1881 and was a highly regarded maker and retailer of all kinds of optical and mathematical equipment. His son in law took on the business in 1917 and was the first firm to bring radio and television to Manchester. This instrument is presented in the original stained pine case and is complete, in excellent condition with no dents or damage and with an excellent polish. Case measures 40" long x10" wide x 6.5" deep. Telescope on stand erected measures 38" long scope x 3.5" diameter lens x 68" high on tripod. Stock number 38856.
