A rare George II oak cased hooded wall clock with 7" brass dial by highly regarded lantern clock maker George Wood of Nailsworth, Gloucestershire c.1750.  The solid oak case with moulded cornice, Greek key design blind fretwork band below.  Slender turned yew wood columns sat either side of the glazed door with original glass. The backboard extending below the case with a shaped edge and hole for securing the clock. The 7" engraved brass dial with stylised floral design to the centre, silvered chapter ring and cast spandrels to the corners. The two weight driven movement... with anchor escapement and 3 day duration, the second weight powering the alarm with setting dial set behind the original blued steel hands. Bears the makers name George Wood, Nailsworth (spelt Nailesworth on the dial). George was the son of clockmaker William Wood, and is recorded as making many lantern clocks and was known to be working between 1720 and 1766.
