A primitive George lll red walnut cased stick barometer by sought after Wensleydale clock maker James Pratt of Askrigg c.1820. The simple solid walnut case with elegantly shaped top and base a...nd the edges with cock beaded trim. Engraved two piece scale, one for Summer readings and the other for Winter; the Winter scale unusually showing 'snow' and 'much snow' at the bottom of the scale. Mercury barometer tube to the centre of the scale, visible to the trunk with decorative brass securing bands; cistern to the base behind the turned cover. The scale engraved with the makers name James Pratt, Askrigg, a well known and collected Wensleydale clock maker (1787 - 1850). Presumably this instrument was specially commissioned as he was not noted as a barometer maker. Presented in excellent condition with a rich colour and polish to the case, the metalwork polished and the movement fully overhauled and working. Measures 40" long x 5.5" maximum width x 3.25" wide at the trunk x 2" maximum depth. Stock number 40197.
