About the artist:
...Brian Shields (signs work Braaq) was born in 1951 and died in 1997. He is an English painter born in Liverpool and is best known for painting industrial scenes of northern Britain. He acquired the nickname "Braaq" in his school days, as recognition of his artistic talent. The unusual name of ‘braaq’ is a misspelling of the famous French artist Braque. ‘Ann’ often appears after his own signature, in reference to his sister, who died at the young age of 21, and to whose memory all of his subsequent paintings were dedicated. Initially a trainee chef in a hotel in Harrogate. He painted a mural in the hotel and signed it ‘Braaq’. It was a local journalist who eventually identified Brian Shields as the painter. His first exhibition was in 1974 and in 1977 he held his first of four exhibitions in London, and was described by The Times as "one of the six most successful artists in England." His paintings are based, in a humorous way, on his childhood memories of Liverpool. He frequently depicted himself as a boy wearing a striped jumper in his paintings.
