A large 19th Century Bronze of a French Huguenot figure. Signed A. Leveel and dated 1847 to the base. The figure is in 17th Century style armoured dress with spear and sword. The Huguenots were mem...bers of the French Protestant Church and therefore were Reformers against a predominately Catholic France in the 16th and 17th Century. Many Huguenots left their homes in France to escape persecution. More than 50,000 refugees fled to the British Isles and settled predominately in London, Faversham, Maidstone and Sandwich; due to the presence of refugee churches. Today English surnames often linked to the Huguenots include Andrews, Baker, Barber, Cross, Fox, Hart and White. The figure has superb patination and measures 6.5" square at base x 29" high to the top of the spear (22.5" high figure height). Stock number CS 157.
